What I’m reading

I don’t update this page as often as my pull list changes.

Here are 16 ongoing and current limited series titles (here in Spring 2012) of which I’ve read three of more issues (so this excludes graphic novels and other cool indie books I’m reading) that I would recommend for the writing, art or both.

Fantastic Four/FF (Marvel) – essentially the same book coming out twice a month, but damn if this isn’t a must-read
Dark Horse Presents (Dark Horse) – the best anthology series going
Conan (Dark Horse) – I’m not a Conan fan, per se, but the scripts are great and so is the art
Wonder Woman (DC) – Azzarello and Chiang breathe new life into a legendary character
Animal Man (DC) – very strong in the beginning, the ending to the Rot storyline will help me decide whether I’ll continue
Sweet Tooth (Vertigo) – while sad to see this one wrapping up, I also believe the best stories deserve solid endings
Spaceman (Vertigo) – Azzarello and Risso together again, but this time a sci-fi story
Unwritten (Vertigo) – an incredible fantasy story, best consumed in long runs
Infinite Vacation (Image) – gets better with every issue when one of these manages to actually come out
Lil’ Depressed Boy (Image) – more fun than the title suggests
Pigs (Image) – a post-cold war thriller
Prophet (Image) – wicked sci-fi
Saga (Image) – more wicked sci-fi
Planet of the Apes (Boom) – political science fiction thriller
Adventure Time (Kaboom) – non-stop all ages fun. Seriously.
The Lone Ranger (Dynamite) – this book is surprisingly good…

There is a wave of great-looking books on the Previews horizon, so look for an update to this page in the fall.

FROM BEFORE

Here’s a list of the books in my current reading rotation. It’s an assortment of single issues and trade format. It’s also not exhaustive – I like to pick up the odd book or collection here and there – but the closest I have to a “pull list.”

  • Daytrippers
  • Criminal
  • House of Mystery
  • Sweet Tooth
  • Madame Xanadu
  • Die Hard: Year One
  • The Unwritten
  • Chew
  • Supergod
  • R13
  • Joe the Barbarian
  • Anna Mercury
  • Greek Street
  • Batman and Robin, Grant Morrison
  • Fantastic Four, Jonathan Hickman
  • Vengeance of Moon Knight
  • DMZ
  • 100 Bullets
  • Saga of the Swamp Thing, Alan Moore
  • Ex Machina

I like variety in my mix.

(You know, when I put it all together in one list like this, the volume is a little concerning)

  1. Nice list. I’ve just started reading Comics again after a 15 year (?) gap. Last think I remember before stopping was the Invisibles ending. Anyhow, I’ve gone a bit mad and my current list is…
    Transmetropolitan
    Seven Soliders
    Morrison’s Batman and JLA run
    Batwoman
Hellblazer (again) – Started intending to just buy Ennis run but discovered that they are reprinting new editions fron thre start so decided to see what happened after I stopped (did’t get as far as son of man originally). Howver, no indication of frequency so it may take a while…

Keep saying that I should stop buying for a while to take time with what I have, but have just noticed DMZ – which looks like my kind of thing.

Just read 100 Bullets – really loved it. Amazing.

    Hi,
I’ve been on a comic book rehab for 20 years. Sold my entire collection when I was 19 and bl.a bl.a…. and then I picked up “Sin City”. Bang… hooked again.
That was 5 months ago and now I am the happy owner of aprox 1200 american Comic Books and 600 hundred Danish Marvel Comics.
    Currently reading:
    Uncanny X-Men #227 (nostalgia)
New Mutants vol. 1 #57 (nostalgia)
    X-Factor vol. 1 #21 (nostalgia)
Alpha Flight vol. 1 #51 (nostalgia)

    Projekt X (Danish for X-Men) – The Byrne/Claremont Run
    Edderkoppen (Danish Spider-Man) – Amazing Spider-Man Annual #15 O’Neil/Miller

Daredevil vol. 2 # … can’t remember .. bought #1-100 on e-bay and I am in the middle of the Bendis/Maleev run… so I am of course blown away!

Scarlet (Icon) – Very, very promising start by Bendis & Maleev. This one has Hollywood writen all over it.
Casanova (Icon) – Best Comic Book on the shelf. I simply love this crazy, crazy comic. Matt Fraction dipped in acid and outstanding art work by Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon.
Superior (Icon) – Millar all over and very entertaining. Good fun and so very well composed.
Criminal – (Icon) – First meeting ever with Brubaker and I am a Fan.
Incognito (Icon) – Hard to get into, but eventually it became a solid comic. It made med want to read it again. It’s looking at me at night wanting to be re-read… spooky and perhaps true.

Fables (Vertigo) – …when I woke up from my Comic Book rehap, somebody got this great idea for a comic. Just finished #1 (Legends in Exiles part 1.) and I want more.
DMZ (Vertigo) – …why doesn’t everybody speak about Brian Wood??? Why is this Comic Book covered in Eisner Awards??? This ia a gem!

    Just finished.
Ambrella Acadamy – Both “The Apocalyptic Suite” and Dallas. One crazy Comic Book. Outstanding writing by Gerrard Way and again the Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon art work is outstanding. Great graphic design of the Trade Paper Back and beautiful colouring. Read if you haven’t read.
….. and many, many, many moore!

Thank you for a great blog. Just discovered it today and hey… I realized that somebody out there is as interested in comic books as I have been for the last 5 months…. and through my entire childhood. Keep up the good work.

    Kaare
