I’ve been on the hunt for a good horror comic for a little while now. And the first ever House of Mystery Halloween Annual does the job nicely. Matthew Sturges continues the format of the main series with a fun romp in the tradition of anthology books that includes three dark tales tied together by an overarching storyline. You don’t need not have read any previous HoM to enjoy this issue.
But perhaps my favourite part of the book comes at the end. There’s a three-page who’s who of the books two dozen or so contributors where they provide personal memories of Halloween including old photos of themselves in costumes. It’s clever and an entertaining read. I don’t know that this issue will get collected in any of the HoM trades, so if you’re a fan you may want to pick it up. And even if it does, I imagine this spread most definitely won’t be included.
